Update your vanity diy

BEFORE                                                             AFTER

So my vanity was looking a little shabby, but they are so expensive.  I went on a search for a better way.  It worked! It's beautiful! I'm so pleased with the results.. especially this being my first staining project!

Here's What I Used:

  • fine sanding block
  • Java Gel Stain (links to where I purchased at the bottom of the page)
  • Urethane
  • a couple socks
  • foam brush
  • krylon short cuts metallic spray paint
At first I thought a project like this was a little intimidating because I didn't want to deal with the stripping, sanding and difference in the real cabinet doors and junkie cabinets made from some paper thin pressed something, but it's really so much easier than I thought.  You don't have to do anything different on the flimsy part.

Step #1
Remove the doors, drawers and hardware and go over it all with the fine sandpaper.  This should only take a few minutes. It probably took me 5 min total to sand and remove some molding I had.

Step #2
Next I applied the first coat of stain.  I did some experimenting on the thickness as you can see I found it best to do 3 total coats. The First two I did with the sock and the last coat I used a foam brush for a final thicker coat.  Be sure to look for any blobies and wipe them smooth.
*now I wanted to be sure everything dried well between coats so one morning I did the first, that evening the second, and the third the next morning.
*A little goes a long way

my experimenting

Don't worry if it looks uneven.  This is my second coat and I was a little concerned with the progress but that 3rd coat fixed it all.

Step #3
Since the last coat was the thickest I let it dry overnight.  The next day I did one thin coat of gel urethane.  I'm sure you could used any kind. I only did one thin coat.

Step #4
I cleaned all the old hinges and hardware.  Then, I took the outside and spray painted them silver.

Step #5
Put it all back together and enjoy! I love how you can still see the grain! The best part is out of my quart can of stain I only used about a fourth of it. So I can do my other bathroom!
